A little bit about me - maybe too much

out of date by a few years...

Hi. I'm just a regular dude, more or less. Maybe a bit unconventional. At the edge of the bell-curve in many respects, actually. Strange but lovable, I'd like to think.

I grew up in Brooklyn, NY - Sea Gate, to be precise. A nice little neighborhood in Coney Island. My parents and Grandmother have houses on the water, which is pretty cool in the summer.

I have loved bicycles all of my life, and still ride regularly. I used to work at Roy's sheepshead cycles as a bicycle mechanic for about 5 years during the summers for extra cash. About 10 years ago, I bought a titanium mountain bicycle with my earnings and some help from the folks, and I ride it to this day. Unbreakable - I was in a car accident with it (flipped twice, no injuries), and it flew off a roof rack at 60 mph, with no problems!

For those of you doing more targeted googling, I went to Coleridge Elementary School, Mark Twain Junior High School, and Midwood High School, all in Brooklyn. Then I went to Binghamton University, and I recently received my Ph.D. from Yale University.

Did I mention that I like science? Or that I am a physicist? Actually, I studied Astrophysics, which you can learn more about on my work-related pages. I'd like to understand or help others to understand the wonders of nature, but I'm not sure the current theories are complete.

I also consider myself a bit of an artist. I like creating some simple graphics, and enjoy wood and metal working. At home I have access to a great machine shop, where I sometimes make an occasional ash-tray, bowl, urn, or other object d'art. I can't draw for my life, so I guess I will never really make it big. Hey, as long as I have some fun, that's all that matters.

As you can see from this website, I also like computers. You tell them what to do, and they happily do it without much complaint. I especially like programming in the languages C++ and Perl. I like finding efficient solutions to difficult problems. Do you ever get that feeling that computers make everything difficult and repetitive? If you write the right programs you can easily automate the most boring tasks, such as resizing thousands of images to 5 different sizes as is done on this website.

Anyway, after almost 25 years of school, I am looking forward to making an impact and a paycheck at my new job at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island. I will be working on a neurobiology research project at the same institution as Dr. Watson, of DNA fame.

Twenty-five years in school may seem like forever, but I have found it to be very rewarding, and I have many extra-curricular activities. This website, for example, doesn't just write and maintain itself! Nor my other 15 or so sites. All those sci-fi authors need to eat, and I have taken the responsibility of feeding them with my book purchases. The airline industry is pretty sluggish, too, so I try to travel whenever my limited budget allows. I also like to play some computer games, like Civilization and Diablo, but haven't done so for years now.

Speaking of a limited budget, if you are a millionaire, my contact info can be easily found on this site. Just make sure the check will fit into my mailbox, and tell all your rich friends about me too. Feel free to subsitute for money with objects and services too.

If you just wandered onto this site while surfing and you liked it or have any comments, feel free to drop me a line, even if you don't know me - I usually reply to friendly emails, even if they creep me out a bit. I realize that having my email and home address on my website is asking for trouble, but I would like to believe people are good, so please don't prove me wrong.
